8 The Three Kingdoms of Glory

The powerpoint below is to give as a helpsheet to each group. They need to look up the verses and fill in the missing words. Answers are on the subsequent slide.

This activity is to help students learn 1 Corinthians 2:9. Print of as handouts and cut into individual slides. Hand them out to the class and get them to say the verse in the right order. Jumble them up again and repeat. Eventually we should be able to do it with out the bits of paper as prompts.

7 What Happens After Death?

In the video, below Elder Russell M. Nelson describes an experience in which he thought he was going to die. Despite people around him panicking, he was able to remain calm. When we understand that death is part of Heavenly Father's plan we have no need to fear. It can bring us great comfort to know that those who have passed on are in the Spirit World awaiting the resurrection.


Also, below is a video about how a young man from Canada came to terms with his friend's death after an accident in which he was driving.

Listen to Hymn 229 and think about what the words 'today' and 'tomorrow' mean in the song. What can we do today to prepare for tomorrow?

6 Adversity Can Help Us Grow

Objective: To learn how to see trials and adversity as opportunities for growth.

When Joseph Smith was imprisoned in Liberty Jail in 1839 he pleaded with the Lord on behalf of the members of the Church, who were suffering intense persecution in Missouri. This came as part of the Lord's reply to the prophet:

"And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good." D&C 122:7

The Olympics!



While it is exciting to watch skillful athletic performances, few spectators actually appreciate the years of dedication, discipline and training that each athlete must endure before he or she is ready for the competition. The performance that each athlete gives is a result of step-by-step progress towards an ultimate goal.

Like preparing for the Olympics, preparing for exaltation involves preparation and hard work. However, only relatively few athletes can receive gold medals in the Olympics, but in life each of us can receive the highest reward. Exaltation in the celestial kingdom is the gold medal we are preparing for and this can only be received through our dedication in keeping the commandments and covenants that God has given us.

Maxwell, who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve said: 'The wondrous and glorious Atonement was the central act in all of human history.' (Ensign, May 1985, 73.)

 

Above is a song telling of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Write a short newspaper story to inform people about the Atonement.

2 Agency: The Power to Choose

In preparation for the lesson, watch or read the talk given by President Monson in Priesthood Session of October 2010 General Conference. He talks about the 3 Rs of choice and you will be asked some questions about these 3 Rs in the lesson:

1. The Right of choice.

  • What important choice did we make in pre-earth life?
  • What was wrong with Satan's plan to do away with agency?

2. The Responsibility of choice.

  • Whose fault is it if I make a wrong choice?
  • Do we try to justify wrong choices sometimes?

3. The Results of Choice.

  • Agency allows us to choose our actions but NOT always the consequences of our actions
  • What did President Monson ask us to do if we have made wrong choices?


We will use the story that President Monson shares towards the end of his talk of Brother Christensen, the basketball player, to learn about the principles of agency:

The Principles of Agency
1. Law

  • What commandment or law is involved in this story?

2. Knowledge of the Law

  • Who has knowledge of this law in the story?

3. Opposition - Good and Evil

  • What choices are presented? Which is good and which is evil?

4. Freedom of Choice

  • Does he have freedom to choose what he will do?

5. Responsibility

  • Who is responsible for this choice?
  • What would have happened if had made the wrong choice?
  • How would this have affected his ability (or freedom) to make correct choices in future?


Note to teachers: The same questions could be asked of the scenario involving Teresa in the manual, or the situation presented in the video 'True to the Faith' from the Family Home Evening DVD Presentations.
