Elder Russel M. Nelson & President Spencer W. Kimball

I came across this blog post on Elder Nelson today which provides the answer to the machine that he helped to develop - apparently it was a heart - lung machine. Points 3 & 7 are directly related to our lesson yesterday in which we mentioned the fact that Russell M. Nelson who performed heart surgery on President Spencer W. Kimball.

Spencer W. Kimball: Model of Forgiveness

Presdient Kimball wrote a book called The Miracle of Forgiveness. In it he taught some very simple steps for us to follow in order to fully repent of our sins:

  • 1. We must awake to the fact that we have committed sins. Read 2 Corinthians 7:9–10.
  • 2. We must abandon sin. Read James 4:7.
  • 3. We must confess our sins: (1) to persons we have offended, (2) to the Lord himself, and (3) to the Lord’s authorized representatives if the sins are of a serious nature. (See Doctrine and Covenants 58:43: “By this ye may know if a man repenteth of his sins—behold, he will confess them and forsake them.”)
  • 4. We must make restitution where we can. (See Miracle of Forgiveness, p. 194: “The repentant sinner is required to make restitution insofar as it is possible.”)
  • 5. We must thenceforth keep the commandments of God. (See Doctrine and Covenants 1:32: “Nevertheless, he that repents and does the commandments of the Lord shall be forgiven.”)

  • To prepare for the lesson on this:
As you listen to conference next week listen out for what is said on the topic of repentance!

    Your invitation to General Conference

Not that you needed it I'm sure, but here is your own personal invitation to come to October General Conference. Who could you share this invitation with that might otherwise not come to conference? We are promised that if we come spiritually prepared, there will be something to help each of us in our lives.

    Harold B. Lee: Dynamic Leader

Apologies for not having posted anything for a couple of weeks, it has been a rather busy time for me!

Today we have discussed the qualities of a good leader described in the scriptures, such as:

humility, compassion, obedience, love, and the power of the priesthood.

Harold B. Lee developed many of these qualities working on the general Church Welfare Program before he became President of the Church. He was always conscious of the needs of others and willing to help.

What can you do to help others and/or be a good leader?

    Searching the Scriptures

Going back a bit, but a few weeks ago we looked at some answers to gospel questions from the scriptures, as Joseph Fielding Smith used to do.

Here are the results you found in class:

    1. Why are the scriptures important?

Exodus 24:1-4 The prophet delivers insights straight from the Lord for us.

1 Nephi 19:23 We should 'liken' the scriptures to our own situation to learn lessons from the past.

Jacob 5:1 The scriptures remind us of the words of the prophets.

1 Nephi 13:26 The Book of Mormon clarifies some of the 'plain and precious truths that have been lost.

    2. What is God like?

Moses 1:1-2 He spoke to Moses face to face on a high mountain.

Moses 1:6 He knows all things, He is the only God and we are created in the similitude (likeness) of His Only Begotten (Jesus Christ).

    3. What will the Second Coming be like?

Job 19:25 The Saviour shall stand on the earth at the latter day.

D&C 34:9 Before the Second Coming the sun shall be darkened, the moon turned to blood, the stars shall fall from heaven and greater signs in heaven and earth.

Excellent work everyone! Remember, whenever you want to find scriptures on a particular topic use the Topical Guide, Bible Dictionary or Index.

Harold B. Lee: From Boy to Man, Close to God

In preparation for next week's lesson, watch the video below of a lighning strike. Watch closely and note what happens to the tree that is struck. Also, there is a spectacular picture and a video about the damage that lightning can cause . What would be the most likely outcome if a person was struck by lightning?
