In response to today's question about King James I can confirm, having watched a programme about the King James Bible, that he was a Protestant. Translating the Bible into English was, in itself, an act of defiance towards the Catholic Church which maintained that it should be kept in Latin. In 1604 he expelled all Catholic priests, and this was part of the reason for the infamous 'gunpowder plot' by Guy Fawkes and other conspirators in 1605. The King James Authorised Version of the Bible was published in 1611. If only I'd had access to wikipedia earlier!
BYU TV has recently made a documentary about the King James Bible which may be of interest to anyone who wants to know about how this book came to be.
